KALOGRIA – ZORBA’S BEACH
|
|
In 1917 Nikos
Kazantzakis, author of Zorba The Greek,
came to Prastova, a green hillside on the outskirts of
Stoupa, to
establish, rather unsuccessfully, a lignite mining business due to a
grave shortage of fuel during 1st World War. He recruited
Georgios Zorbas to be the chief engineer and supervisor of his
operations.
|
|
Impressed by the extraordinary scenic beauty they
choose a small hut, among the eucalyptus trees at the edge of Kalogria
beach to settle down.
The pure crystal blue- green water, combined with the
white sand surrounded with pink Daphne bushes was the best source of
inspiration for the author and the place where Zorba danced to
immortality.
|
|
In 1946 Kazatzakis published his best known novel
"Zorbas The Greek" and
when he was asked about his life in Stoupa, he
replied that it was all described in his book "Zorbas the Greek"
although names of heroes and locations had been changed for the sake of
poetic licence.
|
|
Nowadays, almost 70 years later, Kalogria beach
despite the growth of the tourist industry, still possesses some of its
past magic. The shallow crystal clear waters and the sandy coast offer
memorable holidays to everyone- especially children.
